Do you know from Nemea?
Nemea is the largest viticultural zone in the country and produces the famous wines of Designation of Origin of Superior Quality (OPAP). It is only 41 kilometers from Corinth near the mountain of Prophet Elias, at an altitude of 312 meters.
Until 1923 it was called Agios Georgios by the homonymous Byzantine church, from which the most famous red wine variety of Greece, Agiorgitiko, took its name.

The area is especially famous since antiquity because of the myth of Hercules and the lion of Nemea. However, the importance of the area is enhanced, as from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The well-known games of Nemea, Nemea, sports and religious games that were part of the pan-Hellenic games of the time along with the games in Delphi, the Isthmus and Olympia are played.

Since 1996, thanks to the efforts of the homonymous Association and the archaeologist Stefanos Miller, the struggles are revived.

That is why it is the ideal opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Nemea and the Temple of Zeus.

The wine festival of Nemea started on September 12, 1979 and its creator was Nikolaos P. Bouras (1926-1993)

His love for this place and his project was to be one of the most important events in the region and the starting point of its promotion in the wider Greek area, combining its basic qualifications, wine-culture-history.

Initially, the celebration took place in the central Heroes' Square of Nemea with the help of the then president, the then community authority and after several years in the city stadium.

In recent years, the Municipality, the Nemea Winemakers Association and the Agricultural Wine Cooperative are joining forces so that the "Big Days" become more and more large.

The wineries of Nemea also have a particularly active role, organizing very interesting tasting events, with guided tours of the wine production areas and parallel events that "marry" art with wine in the most intoxicating way.
